Waiting. Not an exciting word…
Perhaps its a long roller coaster line or line in the doctors office. Maybe you have a few months before you can drive. It could be that it is eight more months until Christmas (and you are five years old). Tick tock. Ho Hum. No fun.
However, that is exactly what Jesus told his followers to do just before he ascended into heaven.
“Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. (Acts 1:4 NIV)
Why did Jesus not simply empower them as he was leaving? Why did he make them wait ten days?
There must be something that Jesus wants them to learn in their waiting. The waiting days in Acts 1 must have been difficult. I’d bet there were lots of questions. What happens now? What do we do?
What did they do?
They all joined together constantly in prayer (Acts 1:14 NIV)
They sought God; eager for what would happen next. God may call us to wait at times. It seems that seasons of waiting and seeking are characteristic in the early church. Join us on Sunday as we explore this period of time between Jesus’ ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit (in Acts 2).
