We are in the middle of the sermon series regarding our mission as a church. I hope it will bring clarity to who we are and why we exist. The series will end just before the season of Lent. As many of you know, the season of Lent leads us into Easter. It is a time when we reflect on Jesus life and prepare for the celebration of Easter. This year, we will be studying parts of 7 Psalms as we move through Lent into Easter. We have spent time in the epistles, and the Gospels, and the prophets over the past several years. However, we have not spent concentrated time as congregation in the Psalms. This should be a rich study. We will be following the lectionary during this season. You might remember that the lectionary gives us an Old Testament reading, a Psalm, a gospel reading, and a reading from the epistles. We will be focusing on the Psalm each week. Here is a schedule if you would like to read ahead and prepare for each Sunday. February 26 – Psalm 25:1-10 March 4 – Psalm 22:23-31 March 11 – Psalm 19 March 18 – Psalm 107:1-3, 17-22 March 25 – Psalm 51:1-12 April 1 (Palm Sunday) – Psalm 31:9-16 April 8 (Easter Sunday) – Psalm 118:1-2, 14-24

On Saturday February 11, Muncie Missions will be hosting its annual event “Walk a Mile in my Shoes”. The purpose of this event and the time of year it is held is to help raise awareness for the harsh conditions that the homeless and less fortunate members of our community endure in their daily lives. Registration opens at 8:00 AM and the walk starts at 9:00 AM. Muncie Missions also use this event to help raise funds to provide food and other necessities to those who are in need. Here is a quote about the impact your donations can have: We encourage each walker to consider the impact of their pledges and donations. A minimum donation of $10 will earn each team member an official WAM t-shirt and provide 2 meals at the mission, but a donation fo $25 will provide 10 meals for homeless men (and/or women and children through our Family Services department); $50, 22 meals. Twenty walkers collecting $50 each would provide 439 meals. If you are interested in participating or donating to this great charity please visit www.munciemission.org for more information on how you can get involved.

There is an exciting opportunity this summer to be involved with a Day Camp located at the Hickory Creek Intermediate Care Facility in Gaston! It is a three-day camp which brings Hickory Creek residents (adults with have intellectual and developmental disabilities) into Christian community with members of local church congregations. This ministry opportunity helps to fulfill the mission of SonRise, which is “to Equip the Church to minister with adults who have intellectual and developmental disabilities.” SonRise, which is located in Anderson, firmly believes that adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities are indispensable parts of the Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12: 21-23), and have spiritual gifts which contribute to furthering God’s Kingdom. SonRise also strongly believes in equipping members of church congregations to minister with (not “to”) those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and provides opportunities where strong Christian friendships are formed. The SonRise Day Camp is one such opportunity, where through daily Bible lessons, crafts and games, music and worship, and afternoon group events volunteers involved have the chance to draw closer to Jesus Christ and to those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We are currently looking for members of First Baptist interested in learning more about the Day Camp! If you would like more information, please contact Jane Patton (765) 759-8276 or Pastor Robert Burton (765) 282-8227.

It may seem strange to get a newsletter for January before Christmas. However, with vacation schedules, it seemed appropriate to go ahead and mail out a short newsletter for January. I wanted to let you know about an upcoming sermon series that will begin on January 22. We will be spending five weeks talking about our mission as a church. You may remember talking about this in August; we affirmed a new mission statement at this time. However, we have not spent much time digging deep into this statement. I hope that through this sermon series you will develop a distinctive understanding of who we are and who we are called to be as a church. This past fall, a Ball State student developed artwork around the statement; we will unveil one piece at a time over these five weeks. You can read through the mission statement documentation at http://fbcmuncie.org/why-we-exist/ . I would encourage you to take a few minutes and read through this description of our mission statement. A Spirit-led people gathered to care for and empower each other by stewarding God’s resources to impact our community for Christ I hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a happy new year. I look forward to serving with you in Christ’s mission in 2012. Here is a schedule for the series: January 22 – Gather January 29 – Care February 5 – Empower February 12 – Steward February 19 – Impact
