This week, I have been reading Michael Frost and Alan Hirsch’s Book entitled The Shaping of Things to Come. It is a great read!
In chapter eight, they highlight a mindset that is crucial to how we function as a church. They call it “the hallowing of the everyday.” To hallow something means to make it holy. If we are going to be the church that God has called us to be, we need to learn to live this way.
I don’t know about you, but maybe you grew up with your parent’s describing Sunday as God’s day. “Get on our Sunday best, its God’s day and we’re going to God’s house.” This sort of talk develops a dichotomy between God’s day and other days.
In Jesus’ mind, there is no distinction between our days. Every day is God’s day. Jesus says in Matthew;
In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:16 NIV)
Peter reminds us to;
Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us. (1 Peter 2:12 NIV)
Every day, every hour, every minute is God’s. When we are at work, at home, in the neighborhood walking the dog, we are the body of Christ. I hope that we can break down the unhealthy dualism that puts church in one box and the rest of our life in another.
Let’s remember to hallow (make holy) every day.
