In the Spring of 1970, Fred Shulze received a letter in Seattle, Washington inviting him to become a Professor of Music at Taylor University in Upland, Indiana. He held this position from 1970 until 2002 when he retired after 32 years. In 1971, he was asked to become organist at First Baptist Church of Muncie, Indiana.
Fred received the Bachelor of Music in organ performance from Wheaton College in 1957. After a year of graduate study at the University of Michigan, he returned to Oregon where he became an instructor in music at Cascade College in Portland in 1959. In 1962, he took a leave of absence and earned a Master of Music degree from Northwestern University in 1963. He then returned to Cascade College where he taught until 1968 when he received a teaching assistantship for doctoral studies. In 1970, he received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in organ performance from the University of Washington.
In January 2010, after more than thirty-eight years Dr. Fred Shulze has retired from his position as organist at First Baptist Church. Fred has been coping with several health concerns during the past several months, and we can only wish him well as he continues in the effort to get a diagnosis and treatment. He now holds the title of Organist Emeritus for First Baptist.
